Forest Service to sell land in Missouri
Revenue from the 21,566 acres would pay to develop rural schools and roads.
    By ALISA RECKINGER

The Forest Service has identified 21,566 acres in the Mark Twain National Forest in Missouri for potential sale.
The government is listing more than 300,000 acres of public land nationwide that could be sold to help fund the Secure Rural Schools program, which finances the development of rural schools and roads. The program addresses the decline in revenue from timber harvests that have been shared with counties, according to the Forest Service.
The proposal, announced Friday, calls for selling about 200,000 acres of Forest Service land to generate $800 million over the next five years, according to the Forest Service. The proposal includes land in 34 states, and Missouri has the fourth largest acreage.
The 316 parcels of land identified for possible sale in Missouri range from four acres to 268 acres.
Charlotte Wiggins, a spokeswoman for the Mark Twain National Forest in Rolla, said the land in Missouri is mostly isolated tracts that are difficult to access and expensive to manage.
The forest encompasses 1.5 million acres. Most of that land is in southern Missouri, but the Forest Service also manages 15,000 acres along and near Cedar Creek in Boone and Callaway counties. Wiggins said Monday she did not know whether any of the land listed for possible sale was in the Cedar Creek district.
Wiggins said the Mark Twain acreage is fragmented and not “one contiguous property.†Parcels may be separated from other forest land by private holdings, she said.
The Forest Service manages and preserves larger ecosystems, Wiggins said.
“The Forest Service cannot do much with 10 acres of land; private owners can do more,†she said.
Jim Scheff of the Missouri Forest Alliance said he is concerned that the proposal to sell parts of the Mark Twain forest is part of a larger trend toward privatization of public land.
“This is public land for people of the country as a whole,†he said. “It is our only commons.â€
Even small tracts of public land can be an important part of America’s heritage, Scheff said, adding that he’s concerned about how the Forest Service will define isolated land.
The Forest Service will publish a public notice in the Federal Registrer, prepare maps showing the location of the parcels proposed for possible sale and start looking for public comment by the end of the month, according to the Forest Service. The proposal would need congressional approval before moving forward.

Less land available for public hunting in Missouri.

I don't like it. I like having the opportunity to hunt all over the state, even if I don't right now.

Awsome! Less land in government control can be nothing but a good thing.

Seems some people think the only ones qualified to steward a piece of property is the gvmt. when, if you look around, exactly the opposite is true.

It appears however from HFFF's list that they are selling over 21,000 acres in one acre plots. NICE. :bangin:

I FOR ONE HOPE THIS GETS STOPPED AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL IMMEDILATY!!!!!!
although i am all in favor of free hunting land thats a good thing.
i am against gov control agrre with you there
yes less free land "could" drive up leases but i don't really think most people can afford a lease now so i don't think that part would be a big deal.
I think public land acuattly helps keep hunting going but more than hunting just interest in the outdoors in general alot of our kids aren't growing up in the country any more they need a place to see the out doors.

    SOOOOOO WHY AM I RANTING!!!!!!!!!!
    HERES WHY.........
HAS ANY ONE BEEN DOWN SOUTH IN THE OZARKS LATELY???? YOU KNOW WHAT GOING ON DOWN THERE MAJOR MAJOR LAND RAPE

TIMBER IS THE GOLD OF NEW AGE ITS THE SILENT OIL INDUSTRY. IF THIS LAND GOES UP FOR SALE HERES WHAT WILL HAPPEN SAW MILLS AND LOGERS ARE GOING TO HAVE A HAY DAY THERE GOING TO JUMP IN BUY THE LAND AT PRICES THAT MOST OF US CAN'T AFFORD WHO HERE WOULD PAY 2000-2500 AN ACRE FOR OZARK HILLS? VERY FEW OF US THAT WOULD BE CRAZY... BUT YOU KNOW WHAT VIRGIN TIMBER ON MANY OF THE MARK TWAIN FOREST WOULD EASILY PAY FOR 3000-3500 AN ACRE. IF YOU DO WHAT I HAVE SEEN IN THE PAST FEW YEARS WERE I GREW UP. THEY MOVE IN WITH THERE MACHINES THE ONES THAT MOST OF US DON'T EVEN KNOW EXIST STRIP EVERY PIECE OF TWIG THEY CAN PICK UP. THEY RUNT UP THE LAND AND ABSOULTY RAPE IT........SURE THERE SUSPOSE TO REPLANT 10% OR SOME CRAP LIKE THAT OF WHAT THEY CUT BIG WOOP. AFTER THEY GET DONE WITH THERE HAY DAY THEY WILL SELL THE LAND BACK TO WHO EVER FOR NEAR NOTHING WHICH IS BECAUSE ITS ERRODABLE AND WORTHLESS.
YEAH I MAY SOUND LIKE A TREE HUGGER WELL SO WHAT I AM NOT BUT IF YOU SAW MANY OF THE ACRES THAT I USED TO HUNT THAT PRIVTE PARTIES ARE ALLOWING THIS IMAGINE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN WHEN THE ACUATTLL TIMBER INDUSRTY CAN BUY THIS LAND AND ITS THERE PRIVETE LAND NOW!!!! YOU THINK YOU HAVE MORE CAPTIAL TO PUT DOWN FOR A LOAN THAN A HUGE LOGGING COMPANY i DOUBT IT AND YOU WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO CAUSE YOU WOULDN'T RAPE THE LAND TO GET YOUR PROFFIT.

    AND WHY?????
FOR A SHORT TERM BULL:ass: EXCUSE OF AN ANSWER TO GIVE MONEY TO SCHOOLS AND ROAD !

THAT DON'T SOLVE THE PROBLEM PEOPLE NO I DON'T HAVE AN ANSWER BUT SELLING OF THIS LAND IS ONLY A BAND AID TO THE SO CALL PROBELM!

MANY OF THE PARCILES THAT ARE "SMALL" UNMANAGEABLE TRACKS OWNED BUY THE NATIONAL FOREST AND SAY WITH ONES OWNED BUY MDC WERE DONATED UPON SOME ONES DEATH........THINK THEY WANTED THEM SOLD TO PAY FOR ROADS AND SCHOOL HE!! NO IF THEY DID THEY WOULD HAVE DONE THAT.
HOW MUCH MANAGEMENT DOES IT TAKE JUST TO LEAVE LAND ALONE IT THAT ALL THAT BAD!!!!

I AM STOPPING BUT I WOULD THINK ALTHOUGH WE (TREE HUGGING NUTS AND HUNTERS, BIRD WATCHERS WHAT EVER) ALL HAVE DIFFERENT VIEWS OF WHO CAN USE OR WHAT SHOULD BE DONE WITH LAND THIS IS ONE TOIPIC THAT FOR ONCE SHOULD UNITE EMEMYS TO GET THIS STOPED!!!

HFFF, I hear ya. Although I don't agree with some of what you are saying the bottom line is; them selling off these small parcels is a VERY bad idea. It is just going to continue the trend of the urbanization of rural america. Put a different way, cutting rural america up into 5-10 acre plots. It sucks!

That is what I see to be the real problem with it.

As far as the loggin and that sort of deal. I doubt that will happen to any large degree just because of the size of the plots, what loggin company can buy a 2 acre plot, move their equipment in and log it and make any money? None.

Furthermore. I have quite a bit of experience with hunting around "logged out" forests and frankly it is some of the most wildlife friendly habitat there is.

But again, I hear your rant.

    Preach it Brother
Its that child of a govenor who has no long term vision except past his own pocketbook.

That child needs to be taken out to the wood shed and left there to rot..but thats just my opinion. This website & others like this are prime areas for creating the public outrage that it would take to snuff out this thing.

No forestry company is going to buy disjointed 10 ac plots and log them. They might however buy large tracts and do just that. Like DSG says - cutting up rural america into small plots suck - especially if people start putting big houses and interstates through these small plots. Or developing these 10 acres into subdivisions.

The biggest draw back I think,,is the history of goverment excess. If this is done as a funding measure,,how long before more and more is used to offset other costs and our heritage of undeveloped public available holdings is gone forever????

Granted It is a Natl forest but he is the govenor and he could make a public stand against this move..its his job to whats best for Missouri & this In my humble opinion is'nt it. His lack of action in this matter among many other things he has done has just got me:mad2::mad2::mad2:.

And I voted for the punk:ass:

I might be wrong but from they way I read their code above they aren't sellign 2 acre plots. Looks like the last number in those land descriptions is acreage....looks like a lot of 40's and 80's to me.

Cut every single tree down in a 1000 acre square of land down here where i live (forest everywhere) and it will not erode away, that's not what happens with forest land..when you cut all these trees down, the sun hits the ground, and in 2 years it will be so thick you cannot walk through it, in 10 years you wont be able to see over it or walk through it. it will grow like wild fire, there is no time for ground erosion, and no need to replant what will spring up naturally.

I drove into a cut that a logging outfit got finished with 2 years ago, the land was barren, it looked like a nuke went off and lay waste for as far as i could see...I drove through that same area this year and the saplings was well over head high, the brush was so thick you could not walk into it no place, and the amount of food for the wildlife has never been better in that area, the deer and turkey was all over it, tracks crossing all up and down the logging road. They have a sanctuary from danger, and the hunting around the edges is top notch.

But im with you all, I don't wish to see our national forests reduced because a pocket simply needs lined.

  16. I looked at that property list. There are only a few that are 10 acres/ Many are 80 acres plus. Can the logging industry make use of this sized peice of land? I would like to think that hunters etc. would be able to buy this type of land, but I fear that corporations etc. will get a hold of it first, or by price.

I dont agree that the Fed Gov should sell any of the National forest to pay for schools and road improvements! What happened to lotto money being used for the education system! maybe congress should stop voteing on congressional pay raises every other month! and work on cutting pourious spending habits!

I did however check out a few chunks of land in montana and alaska on that list, and will check them out again when they release the info on the 28th of Feb!

  18. I doubt BABY BLUNT could make any decision on his own without the help of 'OL DAD!!!

I completely agree with your statement beanpile about him not having a very good look at the long term affects of his decisions.

I am TOTALLY against his idea to sell off MOHELA.....But thats another subject....:banghead:

We looked at a lot of the so called pulp wood logged areas in the south east part of the state when we were looking for property. One area, 140 acres, had every tree on it cut to a 12 inch stump. The brush they did not pulp was shoved in the draws out of their way. It looked like the bomb had gone off. Two years later it was a briar multiflora thicket with a few pines starting to poke up pretty good. If you had shot a deer 50 yards into it, you would have needed a tractor to retrieve it. Much farther and a dozer would have been needed. There was lots of food for wildlife in there I guess, but it was useless for hunting, planting, or any controlled usage of any kind. The amount of erosion was attempting to climb up on the road after having filled the ditch completely.
There is 320 for sale near our cabin that the logger went thru and picked his trees. It is a mix of open and wooded, brush and bare. The deer and turkey love it. People can use it too.

The type of pulp wood logging being done in the south east part of the state is a crime pure and simple.

By the way, in recent year the BLM has had a lot of the National forest logged using controled methods. It is a good chance that a lot of that ground has already had the expensive profitable lumber removed. if that is the case, the timber companies are not going to pay jack for it.

terrible idea..heard duncan hunter say the gov is looking at selling 190000 acres of protected land..parks etc...said anyone with the money could buy...mentioned china owning national parks...etc..
