Was a success! I killed this fella in one of our food plots (which look fantastic) last Friday evening. 88 degrees when I went out, but as the sun dropped behind the ridge and the breeze was blowing, it was actually pretty pleasant in our river bottoms. At 6:20 I heard a deer come across the dry creek bed to my west and got up and got situated, just in case. Moments later I saw a nose in the thick brush and then saw antlers. He closed the distance quickly and I drew back as he was about to enter the field at 18 yards. I settled the pin and was starting to ease back on the release and he whipped a quick U-turn and started rubbing his face and antlers in the doe urine I had sprayed in my shooting lanes, now he was slightly quartered away at 20 yards and I settled the pin and slipped a well placed arrow through his ribcage. 50 yards and a wicked blood trail later and he was done.
I will openly admit that this deer fooled me big time. I had never experience "ground shrinkage" before but I was a little surprised when I walked up on him. I thought he was a completed different deer we had been getting pictures of. I don't mean that I am disappointed, as I will never be disappointed with any animal I kill, especially with a bow and arrow, was just a case of mistaken identity. That can definitely happen when it happens fast and especially with so much foliage on the vegetation.
