Fall Food Plots

4937 Views 45 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  justindh1
Who all is going to get started with fall food plots next week? I have my equipment ready to be loaded, turnips seed bought, and some triple 13 ready. By the end of next weekend, my small brassica plots will be planted. Mid August will be the last of my food plots with 2 more acres of new perennial plots going in. Anyone else got plans?

I need to check some stands and trim a few lanes....sure seems like 6 weeks disappeared somehow.

We have about 6-7 acres to go in. One plot is still awaiting beans so Im going to mix it up and see what happens.
I am spraying this weekend in hopes to plant the second week of aug.

My areas long range forecast has some rain in the end of July and beginning of August. Hope that stays the way it is and we get at least one decent rain then. I'm gonna keep an eye on the weather and adjust as needed.
Milo is up and looking great.
Rest of my plots are mowed down and sprayed. Will spray again in a few weeks and then going to put in cereal rye. I decided not to go with turnips this year. Deer liked them a little too much and they were always gone by the end of October.

I just planted my last 2 acres of beans Sunday.
I got over 4" of rain last night so no dirt work but I am going to spray the early beans and will overseed with turnips when I get a round tuit. Then broadcast cereals in September.

I guess I better get going. Gonna try spraying some open ground we got and then throwing down some seed. It's not flat ground, but it's all i got.

Got everything loaded up to take to the property. Gonna work up my turnip plot and get the fertilizer and seed down. Hoping to get a timely rain this next week. As always, fall food plots are a gamble. Rather gamble earlier and be able to play another hand in late August or early September if needed.

Got my new s tine cultivator for my homemade atv implement ready for its first use as well as my craigslist chain harrow. Hopefully it pulls just as good as the last. Its twice the weight so I may not have to add anything to it like I did the last. Just nice to have the tools that make the job easier and better for what I have.

Plan to broadcast cereal rye into my clover plots like always...some time between Aug 25 and Sept 10, aiming to hit a rain event. Gonna experiment with some annual ryegrass in a hard to get to, rocky plot, and one of the good bottom ground clover plots.

My rotation for several years now has been to broadcast rye into clover in the fall, touch up with a little clover seed in late Feb, mow the rye at milk stage...and the cycle continues. Very successful and affordable! Read the QDMA article on niche uses of annual ryegrass, and for a couple of my plots that might work in lieu of cereal rye. We shall see...

I haven't read their article . Do they suggest using it where you can terminate it in the spring before it sets seed ??

I have used it in a pinch for small plots that tanked because of excessive pressure and drought. It is cheap and deer utilize it. It can be a bugger like any winter annual grass if you let it go to seed. Not unbeatable , but annoying.

It is what I would call a kill plot attractant and not a nutritional draw. Its green and moist at a time of year few things are. 02

I may not be doing any fall plots this year. Spring plots did so well i will be loaded up. My frost seeded clover has outperformed expectations as well. I may overseed wheat oats rye and plot topper in soybeans/corn for a little added diversity

Happy with the outcome of the first food plot. Not bad for a 4 wheeler in my opinion. I'm in the same boat as others, waiting for the sprinklers to turn on.

For some reason I only took a pic of 1 out of 3 new food plots on the property. Worked this up and 2 other spots this last week and picked up some of the bigger rocks. Hoping the clover and other **** hides the rest of them lol! This doubles the amount of food plots on the 50+ acres of mostly timber.

Gonna do a little more spraying edges and around trees in the plots and pick up a few more rocks. I plan on broadcasting my seed mix out after that and then come back in late August and throw some wheat out in all my plots.

Got the last of the food plots planted today besides the wheat I'll broadcast in a few weeks. Hopefully we will get a couple days of rain this week. The 3 planted today double the food plots on the property. Gonna pick up some bulk fertilizer tomorrow and hopefully get it out Tuesday before any chance of rain. Now to figure out when I want to mow last years clover plots.

The little food plot is tucked away in the back corner. Gonna try to save that until the rut starts to hit. Just a nice tucked away little area that has some decent soil. The other is a easy to get to plot perfect for getting in quick and quietly. Deer were always in there and now they should be even more.
