In another post shawncat got me thinking about our hunting experiences this year more so than years past. What is the deal with other parties calling committed birds, and just not swing birds but also cupped birds. We hunt up in the Winfield blinds and it has been terrible this year. I can say two or three times on Tuesday we had one particular blind calling our birds, cupped birds all morning. What a joke - I specifically have the guys in our blind and I, not calling their circling birds or committed birds - if that makes sense.

I am tempted to run the boat over to their blind and have a little talk one time or another. But I haven't yet b/c we have been more successful than them and they seem to flare the birds back to us.

What are your thoughts?

Cupped birds do not necessarily mean committted birds. I've had birds cupped several hundred yards away and extremely high that generally surveyed the entire area, but never committed to my spread. Be nice if no one else called them, but on public grounds they have the same chance you do.

[rquote=1514880&tid=105626&author=showmethejewels]i dont understand why youre ranting? if youre killing birds be happy with it.[/rquote]

Well that is a good point and I had to think about that for a sec.

This might seem silly, but just b/c we drop some birds does not make for a succesful hunt or the reason why I am hunting. It is about having a good time with friends and family, but also respecting the right to hunt and others that are hunting. I have only been hunting waterfowl for ten years or so and got into it with a couple friends. I really did not have my dad or someone teach me all the finer points of calling etiquette - so I thought I would post it here and get other opinions. And now that I am starting to get my kids involved I am considering how to explain it and show them the right way - just not the killing way. The same goes for shooting at high fliers...

ok - so maybe this was not the best thread to start, laughing. When I say committed cupped birds - I am talking about birds within 100 yrds, dropping into our spread - NO DOUBT!

If you think the birds are working someone elses spread I agree you should not try to pull them off. Show your kids the right way.:

take them somewhere else besides a duck park to show them the right way.

not speaking for everybody but it seems to me there are moer ppl out there with that dont give a crap attitude at duck parks. but take those same guys out on a private piece theyre totally different. Im not saying buy a duck lease maybe take them to someplace a little less popular. yes they are still out there. Hunted this one spot over and over again and didnt see a single sole. always killed my ducks too. refer to signature line.

When I am hunting a Koolaid stand area I have no problems with callin birds off another party, espcially if they use a motion wing decoy. I dont hunt over a motion wing decoy and refuse to. To me its just fair game when your hunting a public duck park. If you put the time in and spend some windshield time you would be surprised at how many CA areas hold birds and get very little pressure. I would rather spend 2 days driving around then hunt a draw in area.

If i'm in a public duck zone I am letting the hail calls ring if there are birds committed to another party...there are no rules of etiquette in these places other than set up out of shooting distance. I tried adhering to etiquette and taking the 'high road' many a time but the yahoos at these places will draw in, go eat breakfast, then go set up 75 yards away from my party where we've been sitting since 530am.....it's an absolute joke...and when people do this i'm going to call their ducks ALLLLLL day and i'm probably going to change the minds of a couple. It's public hunting at its finest.

Here is our koolaid stand. This is a restricted area where the blinds are drawn on every two years - the blinds are fixed and no one else can hunt in the area. The blinds are usually from 200 to 500 yrds apart.

I had the same discussion with my two boys at dinner the other night.I had asked my youngest not to call at swing birds at the duck park, told him it wasnt right to call birds, that were coming back for a second look at the mojo's and good calling.i asked him if he wanted the same thing to happen if we turned em'.So at supper the oldest catches wind of dad's ethics and say's bouderdash,I'm not standing in frozen water all day and a shot arises i'm blasting........."Do on to others as you would have done to you."If birds are clearly turned, swinging back to calls and dekes.Good on em'.I wont do it because I would'nt want somebody to "CLEARLY' do it to me.Good duckers know when they're swing birds......earn your birds dont burn another to get yours I say.
