They are doing major work on the area, draining the main lake. The area will be closed through this duck season and possibly the next. Not only will rthis affect Schell, but I am sure Four Rivers will be a zoo with the added pressure. Might be a good year to look into a lease.

I had fun hunting Four Rivers a few times last year. Sounds like it will be a tough place to hunt this year.

I have not hunted Schell since the 1980’s.

Fond memories of some great duck hunts with my dad and uncle, both now gone.

Do you recall what year they implemented the draw? They have had it since I moved to Missouri.....so that would be 20 years.

Schell has been a reservation/draw area probably from the beginning. I know it has been as long as I can remember. There was a day when "A" pool (walk in hunting) was THE place to hunt in MO. (I wonder why.)

In 2004, MDC kicked off a Golden Anniversary Wetlands Initiative to make improvements on the state’s five oldest wetland management areas, including Fountain Grove, Duck Creek, Montrose, and Ted Shanks. Schell-Osage is the last wetland on the list to receive renovations.

One of the best hunts I ever had was on Schell back in the 80s ... 4 of us killed 40 pintails one morning !

Hmmm... no wonder the pintails had such a hard time recovering!

Hopefully they make the refuge more desirable for ducks so more ducks will stay on it and not fly around.

Woah. That is a blast fest. Did that with three friends one day in that same time frame near Ft Grove. The number of shells shot that day went into the cases I believe. As you probably know with pintails for every shot fired in the air you shoot three on the water at cripples. :whiteflag:

    Good times.

Well it had to of been at least before 1980. We hunted it a handful of times as it was a long drive from the east side. Duck Creek, The Grove, Swan Lake were the first areas I remember hunting.

That sounds about right, as i remember it showing up on the list of places we could put in for, although never had much luck getting a draw there, only once that I remember....
