Does the moon phase determine deer movement?

6046 Views 99 Replies 34 Participants Last post by  antlercrazed
In the September issue of Bowhunter there is an article posing that question. The author's summary was there is no relationship between moon phase and deer movement. Deer studies have concluded that time and time again but there are hunters that insist there is. There really is no harm if you believe moon phases affect deer movement. Anything that instills more confidence in your hunting will probably cause you to hunt harder and longer. Just don't miss out on some of the best hunting days because the moon isn't at the right phase.

I'd rely on weather fronts over moon phases. I have an app on my phone for moon phases and times of day for feeding but I have not found any evidence that its accurate. I don't let moon phases effect when I go
I know I hate getting in to stands on bright azz full moon mornings especially if there's little to no breeze.

I'm a firm believer that the absolute best time to kill a deer is when you are out there hunting.

I would say that it doesn't but I have no wood to knock on or salt to throw over my shoulder right now:D
This is still an open discussion?

no secret, but I believe it contributes for sure. Would I ever let a moon phase I deemed bad determine if I hunt, absolutely not!

Unlike some others, I have witnessed plenty of major/minor movements when deer were everywhere at non traditional movement times...I use it to stay on stand longer or get to the afternoon hunt earlier.

It seems that the Moon Phase is either one of the most misunderstood phenomenons to date or completely bogus.. With the technological advances available to scientist, researchers, biologists, etc.. There has been ZERO correlation found whereas Moon Phase directs deer movement. Research studies involving collared deer in several states have resulted in no correlation. With that being said if Moon Phase plays a roll in building a hunters confidence whereas they get out and hunt or stay on stand longer.... I don’t see a disadvantage.. Weather is always going to be the main factor... even IF Moon Phase does play a bit part in movement..... it’s always weather that is going to be the main deciding factor on movement....

I say we bring in a biologist to determine what we should believe
We have had our property in NE Kansas since spring of 2007. In 2007 I shot a mature buck(3+) on 10/30, my son shot one in early September about 5 years ago and this year my nephew shot one on Nov 17th. All other bucks were shot on the 10th, 11th, 12th, or 13th of November. We average 2+ mature bucks per year.

I don't put a lot of stock in moon phase. Put much more faith in the calendar.
I have talked to hunters that absolutely believe in moon phases but couldnt for the life of them even tell you what the various moon phases are.

Dr. Grant Woods....

There have been 1,000's of deer fitted with GPS collars throughout the whitetails' range. Researchers have looked for a relationship between when deer are active and many characteristics of the moon's orbit. To date, no relationship has been found. This is based on literally millions of accurate data points.

I suggest you study the influence of weather on deer activity. There's certainly some interesting relationships but there are many variables to track.

Ive not looked at studies and data on this but what I believe happens is that total movement isnt influenced, but WHEN the movement takes place may be. I can tell you that in the elk woods the full moon sucks to hunt unless you have night vision, then its amazing, unless its cloudy at night...

Barometer will tell more than a moon chart...
