I think deer mounts are a personal choice & you should make sure you will be happy when it is finished. When my Dad had his done he knew right where he was gonna put it in the living room. So he had the deer looking to the right so he could get a good look at his antlers every time he sits in his chair.

I agree . Try to picture where the deer head will be placed and the type of mount that you like best . I like the ears forward , but that is my personal preference.

if ur doing a semi sneak with head up the ears look good back...depends on spread...if he is narrow the ears back will make him look wider...$400 is about average...seen some for $330 and some for $500

I take it ur planning on adding the future bruiser u shoot to the wall or walls also. I pick where I want them then try to structure it so it looks well in the room. I.E. 10ft wall, one buck will be looking slightly left, opposite that on same wall one looks slightly right, and the bruiser sits slightly above both in the center looking straight ahead, then everything appears to be looking down the center of the room. Just me, I'm anal on things like that.

do it how you want it, these people don't have to live with it for years to come. imo, i have the semi sneak with head up and i like the ears out to show off the spread on it. course like stated above if you need to compensate, ears back wouldn't be a bad idea.
