Only been out 4 times this season. Took my 7 year old out to our farm one Saturday morning during KS youth, birds were still in the winter flock across the road on the neighbor so nothing to work with. Took annual trip to Iowa the following weekend. Hunted a new 500 acre farm, had more gobblers than I could count in all directions. My buddy and I killed in short order. One bird limit in Iowa blows. Back to the KS farm this past Saturday after soccer for an afternoon hunt for the kiddo. Sat in the haybale blind maybe 45 minutes and after some light calling had a hen come out and feed around the blind at 5 yds or less. We're watching her to the left and I look out my peephole to the right and 3 toms had appeared in the field and were headed our way on the quick. We were set up to shoot out the front of the blind and these birds were on the right. They kinda figured something wasn't right due to the **** show inside the blind trying to get repositioned so they started to walk off. Got the kid lined up and told him I'm going to drop the side window and when I do pick out the closest one and let it rip. Bang flop. Had about two hours to hunt the next morning so went out on some public for something different. Found a Tom but tried to get too close on unfamiliar ground and bumped him off the roost. Sidelined now for a couple weeks but may head out in mid May and see if there's any left to harass.

A lot of kids are that way, not sure if it's the lack of experience. Sounds dumb but I've seen quite a few kiddos be cool when it's go time. I guess it's easier to be calm, cool and collected when you've not experience the failures, lets downs etc? That or when they're with an adult who's not highly excitable before the shot, it helps a ton.

Figured I'd go back and kill that public land bird. Gobbled and strutted all the way in to the deflated Avian hen.
