We've had our share of topics this season, like every season, about meat hunters vs trophy hunters.

Lets say, I own property & the mentality of the farm is, if it's brown, it's down. First living legal deer down the pipe gets an arrow or bullet.

You're my neighbor & you don't like how I hunt. You feel my hunting practices are hindering you from seeing as many deer & impeding you from shooting a wallhanger.

Give me your best arguments as to why I should change my hunting practices.

Let's see who can give me a logical argument without talking down to me or being condesending & get me to see things from your perspective.

I wouldn't try to convince you to do anything different. I would work on my place to make it more suitable for the deers needs, and then let your hunting pressure make my place more heavily utilized:claphands: Shoot away PW,,the bigunns will soon learn where the least pressure is.:banana-man-yeah:

[rquote=1509716&tid=105310&author=Modeerhunter]There's no convincing you, it's obvious you're way too bullheaded and stubborn to listen to any valid argument anyway. :D[/rquote]

See, there ya go, being condesending.:rof2::rof2: Truthful none the less.

I think you should throw in some more info about your land pw...like you own 200 acres and let everyone who asks come to hunt and U bring everyone you know on to hunt...ur a farmer and the deer damage is why you have the brown and down mentality....

I would plant more food and cover on my farm and see if you need any assistance with food plots etc on your place. Then I would chat with you about what has been harvested the previous year and see what all you took off your farm. Depending on the situation, I would let you hunt with me on my place and take you for a tour of the farm to see what all work I have done and how it benefits wildlife other than deer.

Then I would show you some video of the young bucks I passed and explain their ages to you and if you like it great, if not, I will put even more food and cover on my farm to hold more deer.

it s easy its your farm and you can hunt it however you want to...i have the same thing here where in-m at if its brown its down...i dont hunt thst e=way with the bucks but i cant count i how many times during rifle season i let a nice promisnig 2 year oold 8 point walk right past me ony to hear abig boom 5 minutes later when he crossesthe fence onto the other folks proprerty it is irritataing yes but in all honesty there is nothing leg you can do about it..i wish they would let thm walk the same as i woud we have even had this conversation and kinda dont get along now because of it...but it dodnt bother me none...iwill shoot does thos i like to have a few in the freezer for eatin ..and i try real hard to tell the difference between a button and a lil doe...but again unless the mdc makes a spread rule or something....all of us tha try to manage for big bucks are kinda screwed,,,jst my two cents anyway and i hope i didnt offend anyone and if i did it wasnt my intention

While I can't make a valid argument without talking down or being condescending, I can be condescending and talk down without making a valid argument. :rof2::cheers:

I would bowhunt exclusively up til 2-3 days before gun season then bait my entire property line with corn and call the GW and tell him that "you" are baiting "my"property cause ya dont like me and are trying to give me a hefty fine. Both properties will be closed thru gun season, give it 10 days go back to bowhunting.:hysterical:

I dont think convincing someone is the issue.

I think a friendly dialogue is in order. I'd ask what your goals are, if any.

A lot of it depends on how large your property is and how many hunters you have. If its just a couple hundred acres and like 3 guys, a deer or two apeice, I really dont see how the brown and down theory hurts surrounding farms.
If you are decamating the doe population (either you need that much meat, or just like pulling the trigger and donating it all to share the harvest) then thats another story.
Bottom line, I cant force you into anything obviously. I'd say if you WANT to see bigger bucks, you may just avoid shooting immature ones that are legal.
If you dont care, not much I can do about it other than make my farm look as attractive to the deer as possible, like letemgrow and Henry said.

Above all, the main thing is to propagate a friendly open relationship with yer neighbors if at all possible. You'll need their help from time to time and vise verse.

What we noticed around our area is that the majority of the "if it's brown, it's down" crowd slowly but surely have come around on their own. Even the most stubborn of them have started letting the dink bucks walk because they know there are much bigger bucks around if they will just exercise some patience in their hunting.

I'm not sure how we, as hunters, ever let the "instant gratification" mindset permeate the sport of hunting. When asked, most hunters will tell you that they like to hunt because they enjoy their time away from work, away from phones, away from computers, away from the wife, and away from the kids for a while. They claim it's a stress reliever. I believe the "if it's brown, it's down" mentality is a direct contradiction to that. If a person truly wanted to maximize his leisure time in the woods, said person would be more likely to hold out for a deer that meets a standard slightly above "if it's brown, it's down".

On that note, if it's a legal deer, and you take it through legal methods, that's all any of us can really ask for.

If you (in this case) have zero interest in seeing big bucks, then I don't think there is anything that could be said. On the other hand, if you showed some level of interest, I'd gather some pics of bucks that have shown significant antler growth after their second year and show them to you as simply being "cool pics". If possible I'd try to steer the discussion to my own hunting strategies, and how I always try to fill the freezer while still letting young bucks walk. If I hadn't already, I'd see if you wanted any help with tree stands or food plots.

I think the key is to try & get the "if it's brown it's down" party interested in seeing big bucks, and talking about how to "grow" them. But I totally respect the pure meat hunter, and wouldn't try to convince them to change their hunting strategy if they didn't want to.

I figure my best bet is to try & build a sense of camaraderie & respect, and just maybe you'll start wanting to see bigger bucks too. But either way, it's more important to have a good relationship with your neighbor, than to have a completely unified set of hunting strategies.

I myself wouldn't care one way or the other.

We've got a different situation on the farm we hunt. There is a neighbor on one side that is not very friendly. From what we've gathered, not very many people around there don't like him either. He's actually approached my brother and told him not to shoot the deer on his property. We never do, but the deer will run that way. So not much we can do. The farmer said we need to get some food plots going to attract the deer off his property. But we'll have to fence it off to keep the cattle out. Might have to start spending more time out there with the camper.

That's the main thing to do, if you come with the wrong mentality you can kiss working together goodbye. The main thing to do, is give some their way too and you will get in return.
