Since the weather was nice, I decided to pick up the trout rod one more time before I direct my attention towards deer for the next month. Saturday was derby day and I know they stock several lunkers on that day. With the crappy weather making it hard to sight fish, I figured there may have been a few left overs on Sunday.

It was around noon when I got down there and it didn't take me long to spot a lunker set up next to the edge of weeds. Two casts later with an olive micro jig and I was hooked up. The fish didn't make any big runs or anything and just wallowed around on the surface for a while before I was able to coax in between two big weed patches and in to my net. It weighed 5.25# on the park scale and 5# even on my digital scale. The crazy thing is that it was only 19" long and had a 14.5" girth. It's one of the fattest trout I have ever caught.

I've been neglecting the trout parks. Now that the kids are really getting into fishing, I need to take them down there.

Maramec had some decent fish in it this year. I never did have a problem finding decent quality fish to bring back home. I heard Montauk and Bennett fish were running small though.
I don't know, ive never saw a stocker with that much color.....Imho it swam in from river......tails in really good shape too.
Really nice one.
Good way to end the season.

Unless you go again this year. :D

The nose was really beat up and the lack of fight in it are what makes me think it was a stocker. I've caught some lunkers in the winter and during high water that I believe were river fish and they fought like crazy! It was definitely the prettiest lunker I've caught down there.
Its built like me....almost as big around as I am tall.

Very nice catch!
