Last Friday I left for the high country for a mule deer hunt. I've hunted mule deer for 22 years, but I've never hunted them in the high country. I read David Longs book and read dozens of article in Eastman's about this adventure.

My neighbor kyle and I started our hike about 2:45 am on Saturday morning. We scaled 2000 vertical feet in about 1.10 miles bushwhacking the whole way. I even step over a large pile of grizzly scat on the way up. Once we made the ridge, we hiked another 2 miles.

At sun rise we started glassing the high country basins. We saw a few deer, a black bear and a mountain goat. We didn't find the muley that we were looking for.

Day two was much the same except that a storm blew in on us late morning.

Kyle had to work and left on day three. I continued to search without success. In fact, I didn't even see a deer on day three.

Day four I woke up to 50 mile per hour winds with gust up to 70. The news reported the lowest documented pressure in 60 years. Not only was the wild blowing, but it was snowing sideways. With an hour left of light, I was thinking of throwing in the towel. I had enough of the steep country and extreme weather. There were a couple of drainage's that I didn't glass yet and instead of giving up, I continued the search.

It's a good thing I did because I found a beauty 4x4 (5x5 with eye guards) in the first drainage. I don't have to words to describe the feeling a had sitting next to this big old high country muley. This hunt has been a dream of mine for 20 years. It was by far the hardest hunt I've ever done.....but I have feeling that I remember this for the rest of my life.
