Here is the list for IL rifles that are legal next season. I will use my Browning Abolt slug or bow, but Jackson is liking the idea of getting his own for IL. Since these are now legal, I want to give him some insight on what options may be if he decides on something besides a slug gun.

I know little to nothing about any of these guns. Thanks in advance for feedback and top choices.

444 Marlin, 45-70, 38-55, 375 Win, those would probably be tops on my list..

Mostly because they are good whitetail rounds, that are not that difficult to get, and have a nice history to them.

As for rifles.... T/C enore not a bad way to go. Although, to be really cool an 1885 or 1874 would be my choice. But, now you are talking some big coin.

Yeah, I guess it's just up to what a I guy wants to use. But, a Browning abolt shooting 20 ga slugs is just about all anyone would need to kill deer with.... Not much different than most "rifles" hitting the woods for deer. The whole you can't use a rifle, but you can use a slug gun reeks of ignorance.

Henry makes these in 357 MAG, 44MAG and 45/70. I'd prolly go 44Mag or 45/70 if you bought one for deers.

My youngest Wyatt has shot two deer with the 300 blk out. 125 grain sierra hand loads.
One buck and one doe, back when he was 6 and 7 yrs old. Both wound channels looked like they had been hit with a 30-06.
Both were quartering to shots and both went full pass through at about 80 yards. Front of chest entrance and out behind the ribs on the far side.

45 -70 is a horse! As is the 454 casull. Only place I have seen the casull is in a pistol, but it packs a wallop!

Wyatt dropped a deer with a 45 long colt out of a pistol when he was 9. It is slow has little recoil at all but it keeps on going.
I have seen american buffalo killed with a 45 long colt on the internet.

Out of those on the list the 300 blk out is most like a modern high power rifle.

Good luck on the hunt for one. Look at a lot of ballistic charts.

An 1873 44-40 is a cool rifle but I wouldn't recommend it for deer. Boom.........................................................***! Slow and not much energy at 75 yards.

BTW, you can get the CVA Scout in 350 Legend as well, that'd be a good choice too.

I had no idea that The Peoples Republic of Illinois was considering allowing any rifles for deer season. The calibers that CJ mentioned would be my choices as well . I have 2 444s and both are very accurate out to 150 yards . I’ve never tried shooting them farther than that , because of other options I have if sitting over a field . Are they really limiting the choices to single shot ?

Whatever single shot rifle you choose, I’d make sure it has a wooden stock. Only a matter of time before one of the brain trusts over there decide that a black stocked rifle is far more dangerous and likely to wipe out a shopping mall than a walnut stocked one 🤣. Seriously, I’d use a really good muzzleloader over most or all of the choices if limited to a single shot

Unless you are just looking for an excuse to buy a No1 or 1874. Seriously though, if a person has a nice inline ML, they are about as accurate as anything these days out to one-fiddy..... IL gun laws are insanity across the board here. They have outlawed thumbhole stocks, many T/C encores have theses. The idiocy of IL politicians knows no bounds.

He might want to consider a handgun like a contender or scout. That way he can muzzleload hunt here in MO with it. Have him go ahead and start the suppressor application process now. Those big pistols are much more enjoyable with a can on the end.

Because of how much ammo is out there I would just get a .350 Legend and call it a day. That be what I got if I hunted Illinois
