Hunting my grandpa's farm last weekend. Saturday afternoon two does come crashing through with a good buck about 20 yards behind. I say "hey" twice, then yell it to get the buck to stop about 25 yards away, broadside to me. I hit him behind his front shoulder, about the middle of his body. As he's running away I see blood coming from his wound. The two girls and him run by my buddy who is in another stand and he sees that it's bloody and we're both super pumped. We get down and I'm shaking like crazy because this would have been my first buck and first archery kill. Followed his blood trail for almost 3 hours, well over a mile. The snow in the woods helped a lot but eventually he ran to grass and we couldn't pick up the trail. Went looking again Sunday with no luck. Sucks but I'll be out again next week.

After shooting any deer I give them two hours unless I see them fall. Then I start up the trail and decide from there if I should back out or continue depending on the the trail itself and other circumstances. Those first two hours no matter how hot has never resulted in me loosing the meat from spoilage. Just how I do things. Good Luck next time.

exactly and i hope you honestly feel that every deer is a good one and not just one with horns. don't have to be a wallhanger to do the right thing with it.
