How makes a good budget .25-06? Savage Axis? I’d prefer a wood stock but I could always add it later.

Last one I could find under 1k is a Weatherby Vanguard on Sportsman’s warehouse for about $650.

Or you could split the difference and go with a 6.5-284 Norma or 6.5PRC… Savage makes several options in both!

Yes, that is one of Savage's selling points. There is a lock nut on the barrel so the average Joe can get a gauge and put the barrel on themselves.

6.5 cm is a nice round just depends what you want it for
Buy a mauser action and build one. I bought a 25-06 over 30 years ago. Bolt handle reshaped to clear scope, safety removed from bolt . Side mount safety put on Timony adjustable trigger hinged floor plate walnut stock.
There are options. Don't know what it would cost to build now. Kind of nice having a one of a kind.

Are you just wanting the different caliber or are you looking for a new rifle? I sense maybe you are wanting a wholesale change, as in new look, different stock etc.

Pickup something you can enjoy. I thoroughly enjoy a Ruger American Ranch Rifle in .300BLK. It’s definitely not my most expensive rifle or even most useful. But 0 recoil, ammo was easy enough to find so bought plenty and I can go shoot at the range all day without spending my Xmas money. Secondary purpose, small enough to get little guys into shooting with it. Even my nephews think a .223 or .30 cal are cooler than the .22lr’s when they get to a certain age.
