To allow Missouri "big game" hunters ample time to make plans for deer and fall turkey hunting, the Missouri Department of Conservation annually announces these seasons well in advance. The 2006 deer and fall turkey season dates have now been set, with basically no changes in season length or format from last year's.
Archery deer and turkey seasons run concurrently and will be open Sept. 15-Nov. 10 and Nov. 22-Jan. 15, 2007, closed for the November firearms deer season (although an archer may hunt deer with his bow during firearms season by purchasing a firearms deer hunting permit). Shooting hours run from 1/2-hour before sunrise until 1/2-hour after sunset. The limits remain at two (2) turkeys of either sex and two (2) deer of either sex, although only one (1) antlered deer may be taken prior to Nov. 11. Any number of antlerless archery deer permits may be purchased and used in all of north Missouri.
Fall firearms turkey season will run the entire month of October in all counties in Missouri except seven Bootheel counties. Shooting hours are 1/2-hour before sunrise until sunset, and two (2) turkeys of either sex may be taken, even on the same day.
As before, firearms deer season has five segments, beginning with an urban season on antlerless deer only Oct. 6-9 in 11 counties near St. Louis, Kansas City, Columbia and Springfield. Youth-only deer season will be Oct. 28-29 statewide for age 6-15 youngsters, with a season limit of one (1) deer of either sex.
The November firearms deer season will run Nov. 11-21 statewide, with shooting hours from 1/2-hour before sunrise until 1/2-hour after sunset.
All north Missouri counties will allow hunters to use as many antlerless deer permits as they wish, and landowners with at least 75 acres can get up to two no-cost antlerless permits. However, all firearms deer hunters, no matter how many any-deer tags (landowner and purchased) they have, can take only one (1) antlered deer per year.
A statewide muzzleloader season closely follows the November firearms season, Nov. 24-Dec. 3.
Deer and fall turkey hunting permits are now available at all MDC offices and license vendors and be sure to pick up and read a free copy of MDC's 2006 Fall Deer and Turkey Hunting Regulations.
