I have shot 1000 rounds out of my bolt action 17 HMR, fun on prairie dogs!! I bought a marlin 22 mag about the same time and haven't even went thru a 50 round box yet!!

My vote is for the 17 HMR!! Wind does effect the 17, try shooting that little booger in a 30 mile an hour crosswind in Kansas!! Not very accurate then. But wait for a calm day and your out for the time of your life with one of those 17s!!

That little ballistic tip movin at those speeds tears stuff up to. Shot a 2x4 it left a tiny entry hole, bout the size of a nail hole, but massive exit hole, big enough to put your little finger in. You can take down coyotes with it (probably not recommended) Also my friend raises goats, and one had to be put down, .17 behind the ear and it dropped and didnt even kick.

[rquote=1515282&tid=105650&author=beanpile]anybody here like these little rounds?

personally I liked the 22mag better.

what say you?

+1 to that. I bought a .22 mag instead of the 17, simply because the ammo options for the .22. The centerfires took care of prairie dogs the .22 mag couldn't reach.

Speaking of .17 does anyone still have a semi-auto Remington 597 .17. Remmington recalled all of them, they will give you 200 to send it back.

There will never be another semi-auto .17...for good reason

Yeah the BP folks told me that's why they didn't have any 17 ammo. Remington 597:cool3:

I had a friend blow one up, Now he has tinnitus (constant ringing ears), he is in a legal ordeal with remington, who in turn is trying to blame it on Hornady. He may never see any money, I guess there are a LOT of cases like his out there.

I knew nothing about it until I visited the Columbia Bass Pro on Black Friday. I asked the first guy if they had any 17 HMR ammo. He simply said no. I looked and looked but couldn't even find a place where it was suppose to and used to be. Then this guy asked to look at one at the gun counter. BP employee hands him a Marlin he says I would like to buy it, BP guy says good luck getting ammo for it. Then proceeds to tell the tale about all the 17 ammo being recalled because of guns blowing up. Then he admits that the Remington 597 is the only gun he has heard of blowing up.

I'm not knocking them and I know a lot of folks shoot them but the only Remington I ever owned didn't shoot near as well as my Howa, the bolt felt sloppy and I just really didn't like it.

Sorry

Blarney. You can get .17 HMR ammo any place worthy of selling ammo, period. Just because Remington had problems with the 597 is no reason whatsoever to quit selling Marlin and Savage boltguns, or any other boltguns, for that matter.

Most, if not all of the troubles with 597s comes from not cleaning the guns on a regular basis. Eventually, the chambers get dirty, and bolt doesn't close all the way, and you get a Kaboom. Had Remington engineered the thing NOT to shoot without the bolt being completely closed, it probably wouldn't be an issue.

In all honesty, that's not a gun problem, that's operator error.

As usual, Bass Pro has staff that oughta be selling plywood and nails instead of guns. They get some punkinhead in there blowing smoke about something he isn't qualified to shoot, let alone advise buyers about. That's a different thread, though.:D

[rquote=1516018&tid=105650&author=macon county boy]17hmr is sweet planning on getting a mach 2[/rquote]

The Mach 2 is a MAJOR letdown after shooting the HMR, seriously. It's like driving a Toyota Yaris after 10 years in a Corvette.

It just ain't satisfying.....................................
