Hi everyone I am brand new to this forum. I applied for the early season managed hunt at Weldon spring CA (next to Busch wildlife.) I am new to scouting and this is the first time I will have hunted Weldon. I have read that the deer are used to humans and such and getting far from the parking lots is the best option. If anyone could give me any tips for scouting out there it would be helpful since I am new to hunting at Weldon springs.

    Thanks

I think everybody is going far from the parking lots now. I'd stick close to em to throw the deer a curveball

OP it's a pretty common question, your relatively new to the forum.

I'll try to help, most of the answers you get here in general will have little value. A large percentage of the site will either give goofy answers or tell you to do your own scouting. There is a lot of truth to scouting on your own. I understand you may not have the time or live a distance away making it difficult.

I start scouting an area I'm unfamiliar with using Google Earth. Often I'll print out a copy and mark areas like fields, streams, etc. I'll place a priority on looking at areas "I think" would hold deer or provide an ambush point given the terrain.

I'll put some boot leather down to look at those spots.

As far as getting as far away from everyone else. In theory it's a great idea, but unless your on thousands of acres it's not going to happen. It's public land everyone is free to go where-ever they want. They don't know where you are and likely they will walk walk past you at 8:00 opening morning.

My advice is find a spot you like and sit tight. Everyone moving around will keep the deer moving. Expect what ever spot you picked to have someone else in it opening morning. Have backup spots. Several.

As the guys I hunt with say "you can't kill them from the cabin" (you can but thats a different story). Be prepared to spend the whole day there at your spot. You get up, someone else moves in, sort of like playing the slots at a casino.

    Good luck

My advice would be to get drawn first

You'll also hear about the big ones that cross from Busch to Weldon right up by the main building at Busch
