Catfish Roundup 2009 talk and post party
EDIT January 14, 2009:
South trip: EDIT 1/26/2009.......not enough folks able to get off work to hold the event.
North trip to Mark Twain Lake:
Hopeful dates: May 26 through the 29th. (Tuesday through Friday). Lines go in the afternoon/evening of May 26th, and we pull lines and break camp
the morning of the 29st. Exact location of camping still needs to be ironed out.
I'm ready to start talking about some dates and locations!
In 2007, lines went in June 7th and we pulled out June 9th. We said we were fishing too late.
In 2008, lines went in May 18 and we pulled out May 21st. We said we were fishing too early. Things were crazy for me when I went back the next
week.
So, here's the dates I'm thinking of.
Option 1: May 18th through the 21st. (Monday through Thursday).
Option 2: May 26 through the 29th. (Tuesday through Friday).
Option 3: June 1st through June 4th (Monday through Thursday).
Without looking at any data, I think Option 2 or 3 is going to put us in the hottest times. Probably Option 2.
For those who have not joined us in the past, it the Roundup is a low-alcohol induced, fairly serious fishing trip. We joke, and have a lot of fun,
but the Roundup is a serious fishing trip for several of us. The main target is flathead catfish, but any biters will do.
And I'm not going to say its a non-kid event, but the lines and hooks we use are VERY unforgiving. They'd hold down a full-grown man if you let them.
I'd hate to see someone get hurt worse than Bricky busting open his thumb last year.
We've tried to do it on weekends before, and weekends are not pretty. It just doesn't work out to find enough places to fish and not have our
equipment messed with.
So......let the ideas flow! I'm in Bricky's boat! Calling it!

Moon, water temp, and other data to come.......
This year, the moon says......Option #1 will be the best for 2009.
Option #2 is next, not far behind.
Then Option #3.
By the moon, the best night to have lines in this year would be the night before Labor Day unfortunately. Last year, it was June 3rd, and we KILLED
fish that night.
As far as the water temp goes for north MO, Option #2 will be the best, then Option #3, then Option #1.
As far as these stats go, I think Option #2 will be the best time to go up here. Maybe we can do Option #1 in south MO and Option #2 in north MO.

Anyone think I'm CRAZY ate UP with stats?!

Equipment needs for participants to come....
Objective: Set lines and catch a bunch of big catfish!
What you need to bring: Everyone that wants to fish will need to have plans set up ahead of time for bringing a boat, or having a seat in someone
else's boat. Big catfish equipment. (We're going to break 50 pounds this year at LEAST once). Camping and eating gear. Equipment to work in a group
effort to catch as much bait for each evening as possible so we don't have to buy much bait. Funny jokes.
Baits used: Mostly bluegill in the past, but we've also used bullheads and goldfish. We PREFER green sunfish over all other baits, but they are hard
to come by most of the time.
Keeping bait alive: Using live bait is a MUST. Keeping the bait alive in camp is a continuous chore, but we all learn more and more each year.
Here's some information rounded up for Yote. This will help out anyone that's interested in jumping in head-first.
Parker
500 yards of 130# Dacron is $28.69 at Cabelas.
-or-
300 meters of 130# Dacron is 29.99 at Bass Pro. (They've got 200# too for 39.99).
And I'd get your main line here:
Memphis Net and Twine (AWESOME service and equipment).
I'd either get some spools of the 600#. (Bricky decided the 400# was too small last year. It held, but cut your hands easily).
http://www.memphisnet.net/category/twine_greenbraidedseine
EDIT: I did some research today at the local bait supply shop for us. The #72 (600 pound test) is what I have for my larger main line. I've
got some #60 too, its 500 and some change pound test.
So......I guess #72 would be the stuff to get from Memphis Net and Twine......green braided.
Memphis is $4 cheaper per spool than the place here locally that has the gold line I use.
And while you're on there, get some of THESE in 7/0. If you buy the 130# Dacron, you'll be able to thread these hooks perfectly, and they are AWESOME
hooks!

Call making. I'd like to fish, I'd REALLY like to, but I sure wouldn't like
to see a kid (or man) crying beside their Christmas tree this year either.

COME ON! A guy can dream, can't he?! We started talking about the 2008 one
in February, and got over 400 posts in that thread!
Truman? Mr_Hannibal is in charge of location. I've never caught a flat at all out of Truman, though I know they're in there. Truman is definitely
known for the blues.

I know nothing about putting lines out, but that's too darn close (if you go to Stockton) to not make an appearance and have some fun.
I do not have a boat, so I'd need to go with someone.... I'll have to think about it, but you sure do put a hurting on the cats:rock:

Catfish!!!!!! Now you are talking my language,,,,,, I would love to go. I may have to bum a boat ride if I can go. Once it gets a little closer to the
date I will know more along the lines of if I can make it. I am so glad I found this site my girlfriend and I have tried going hunting and fishing
with some of our friends and they just are not interested, but now it looks like we have a chance to meet some people with our type of interests!!!!!!
I will have to keep updated on this one.

my vote is for MTL Option 2: May 26 through the 29th. (Tuesday through Friday).
if the camp site is gone i'm sure we can come up with a place some where + we now know where to set some lines

Put me on the interested list. But the question is, which one of you guys are willing to put up with me in your boat? I was hoping to have a boat by
this years roundup, but it's not looking like that's going to be the case. Gotta get myself in a financial position to buy a certain house when he
says it's time to sell it.

how far from the lake are you
hunting & fishing is a way of life
and LIFE IS GOOOOOOOD !!!
Life's journey is not to
arrive at the grave safely
in a well preserved body,
but rather to skid in sideways,
totally worn out, shouting
'...holy moly ....what a ride!'
