Out on a limb with KC 2008
HomertheHunter called this afternoon and asked if I wanted to head up to his place to do an evening hunt. Of course I did, but have been painting my
house today. Thankfully, it started raining here at the house. So we ran up there and I didn't see squat except a grey squirrel and a possum. He
saw a doe and two fawns though. Oh well, always good to get out in the woods. I probably won't get back out until I get this house done though. I
think I used up my free pass with the wife.

Met up with HomertheHunter at my farm for an evening hunt. No deer seen until I was driving around after dark and saw two that I think were bucks
feeding in the beans.

Hunted again with HomertheHunter this morning. Went up to his in-laws farm. Saw 2 does as we were driving in. Nothing else!! Well, he saw a yote
and got a horse a little hot-to-trot!!
Headed down to my farm for an afternoon hunt. Thought I would try to ambush the two bucks I keep seeing in the beans. Took my blind and took up my
position. Note to self: That blind is not tall enough to draw your bow back. And definitely not big enough to use the shoot-thru mesh windows. Saw
two deer (does I think) about 1,500 yds away with binocs. Saw 4 more (2 were the same as earlier) and a yote with my headlights as I was driving out.
Also repaired broken window in the box blind and fogged all 3 box blinds too. Hopefully, going to have some good pics next week since I put fresh
batteries in my junk trail cam and put it back over my Trophy Rock.

Left work early and got in the stand at my farm. Not much to report. Didn't see a thing until I was driving out and saw a forkie with one side
missing in my headlights.

Headed up to Hayz' to meet up with everyone for the NW Area Youth Hunt. Got there Saturday afternoon and everyone was already out in their blinds,
which I expected. I didn't have to guide until Sunday morning so I took my bow and climber and headed out to some public ground. Absolutely, nothing
seen except a very curious red squirrel that about jumped in my lap.

Morning hunt with Jess and his father Paul from Iowa. Went out to a pop-up blind and heard something walking in the timber behind us, but the only
action we got was a turkey flying over the blind.
Afternoon hunt they wanted to change things up a bit so we headed over to the public ground that I hunted the evening before. While pre-planning we
decided to hunt the cut beanfield furthest east from the paved road that we could. Well, got out there around 2'ish or so. And had 3 bird hunters
running two dogs in the milo field right next to where we wanted to hunt. So we headed back to another funnel I knew of and got there just in time to
run into another kid and his dad headed out to hunt. So we walked back to the first field and talked to the bird hunters and they were headed out.
Was a pretty uneventful afternoon until around 5:30 or so. Paul had just told me he was surprised we hadn't seen anything when I spot a small buck
walk out of the timber at 300 yds. He runs over to a doe I hadn't see come out and they mill around for a bit. I tell Jess to belly crawl up to the
field edge (we were just sitting in tall weeds on the ground) and get his gun ready and we would call the buck back. So Jess gets to the bag and Paul
starts crawling towards him with the rifle. The does comes out in the field better and with a little help from my Vector grunter the buck follows.
Jess showed great patience waiting for that buck to turn broadside and stop walking. Then BOOM!! The buck does a mule kick and runs back to the
west. Paul saw him slow down, but not go down. The rest of the story is in another thread, but it was a ton of fun. Just hope they found it this
morning.

Went down to the farm with my camper Friday night to spend the majority of the weekend. Got there about 9'ish PM. Found out soon my furnace wouldn't
work just off the batteries so it was a COLD night. Woke up early Saturday morning freezing my tail off with the camper rocking so bad from the wind
I just rolled over and went back to sleep. Finally got up and dressed and headed out to the stand to find out it was actually warmer outside the
camper, but the wind was atrocious. So I drove over towards my #3 box stand to drop off the decoy for the evening hunt. Immediately saw a shooter
buck chasing a doe across my bean field about 200+ yds away. I didn't have my binocs, but I could tell he was at least an 8 pt. Grunted a few times,
but he wanted nothing to do with me. He only had one thing on his mind. Got the decoy put together and stashed and headed to #1 strap-on stand in
the timber. Sat there until about 2 PM with no movement. Headed into town to my folks to take care of a few things and it took longer then expected
so I didn't get back out to the #3 box stand until 4'ish. Got set up with the decoy and noticed a doe out in the bean field about 300 yds away.
Tried the can call, tried grunting, tried rattling, nothing worked. She barely even looked my direction and with the wind still blowing like a
hurricane I figured she couldn't even hear me. She disappeared for about half an hour, but I think she just bedded down in the beans because she
showed back up in the same spot until dark. Went back to town and picked up my buddy's generator and some dinner. Headed back to the farm and
woohoo, had HEAT!! Dad called and decided he wanted to come out so we knocked a few cold ones back and chilled out in the camper.

Went out to #3 box stand this morning and got set up. Had 5 deer out in the beans at first light. None in range, same shooter buck from Saturday
scanning the field for possible hot does. He headed out pretty quick with no response to my Vector or anything else. The does stuck around for a
while, but I had to leave just before 8 so I could make it to church on time. Walking back to the camper I spot a doe being chased by a basket 8 pt.
Watched them for a bit when I see another "doe" following the trail. After glassing the "doe" I realize it is a spike. Well, I could only see one
spike so it is now the unicorn buck. Watched them chase to the north timber. Headed back to the camper, got packed up and headed home. 10 deer seen
in just over an hour, none close enough, but 3 of them were bucks. Probably gonna be a while until I can go bow hunting again unfortunately.

Spent a very windy night in the camper Friday night. And was off to a bad start before I even went to sleep. Unloaded the 4 wheeler from the trailer
and when I went back out to start it up again it wouldn't start. Still won't start now. Not sure what is wrong with it. So I get up opening morning
and my Dad meets us at the camper. We walk to our stands and it starts sleeting it's tail off. Within 20 mins the field is solid white in front of
me. I spotted a shooter buck a long ways away and it never shows up again. Then I had a small basket 8 pt at about 150 yds that I passed up.
Evening hunt I am in the same stand and see a 120" 8 pt (I think same one I saw that morning) out in the beans. I had a chance to take him, but he
wasn't quite what I am looking for so I passed him up. Seen two does when I was driving back down the farm road after dinner.
No kills on the farm opening day.

Spent the night in the camper by myself Saturday night and my cousin's husband and son meet me just before 6 AM. My Dad was a few mins behind them.
We head to the stands and it feels like a better day. WRONG!! I watched the resident bald eagles sitting on the limbs and chasing a hawk. Bald
eagles can maneuver like a fighter jet. Pretty cool to watch him do rolls in the air. Also, saw a bobcat on the levee. Too far for a shot, but good
to know that I wasn't just seeing things during Spring turkey season since we had never seen one on our farm before. Dad calls and tells me there are
does all over him and they are going to be out in the food plot. Nada, nothing, zip shows up except 3 dogs. Then I hear a strange noise on the side
of my box stand. I sneak over to the side of the box and see daylight between the floor and the wall and some small fingers in the hole. I poke my
head outside and a squirrel looks up at me. Why he decided to tear a hole in my box stand I have no clue. But he came back while I was at the camper
and finished his hole. Good thing I am rebuilding the stand in the Spring. I head over to my Dad's stand and he's got a good buck, a smaller spike
and a doe bedded in the neighbor's cut bean field. Dad stayed on the stand for 5 hrs watching that buck chase the spike around and hold on tight to
that doe. I also told him about a scrape he had to walk by. He said he had "freshened" it up Saturday night on his way out of the stand and Sunday
morning it was all torn up again. For the evening hunt we decided to sit together in a fence row closer to where they were bedded and I would video
the kill and possibly take out the doe too if granted the opportunity. On the walk in we spotted a pure white possum. Camera was buried or I would
have gotten a pic of it. We watch them for another 3 hrs and they finally started walking away from us. So I took him back to his truck only to see
another buck walk out of the timber on the way back. Getting too dark to tell how big, but I think it may have been one of the two I passed up on
Saturday. Saw 3 does on the way out of the farm and one on the way home.
No kills on the farm on Sunday.
Needless to say I am very disappointed with the deer I am seeing and more disappointed in the ones that didn't make their appearance. I thought for
sure they would still be chasing, but seems as though they are locked down on my place.

Spent the night in the camper again. Got up and got out in the stand before first light. Passed up 3 does out in the bean field. :bangin: They
kept looking behind them so I thought there would be a buck coming in too. Wrong. They hopped my property line and stood about 600 yds away with the
rest of their group. 10 does all together. When they walked somewhere it was nose to tail all of them in a line. Pretty cool! I took some pics and
maybe even some video, but I'll have to check. Then I had 4 more does come out about 500 west of me. Didn't want to take that long of a shot. When
I left for the day (had a physical agility test) I walked the edge of the timber where I had seen the 4 does. I jumped 3 of them up, but never had a
clear shot. Got in the truck as I was headed out of the farm for my test and saw a single doe in the edge of the timber. No shot taken obviously.

Hunted the black box stand again. Saw 5 or 6 does at 500 yds again come out of the timber along with a little forky and a nice 10 pt. Didn't want to
take a shot like that on the 10. Had another smaller racked buck come in too, but was too quick for me to get a look at his rack at that distance.
They were sure chasin the does around, but that big 10 wouldn't let them get too involved before he'd run them off. I got good video of that. When I
got out of the stand I set my Dad up within range of that timber they came out of and I did a push thru the timber. Man, that's some thick stuff. No
wonder they like it. I had 4 does at 35 yds, but was too thick to shoot. He saw two bucks and a doe come out and one buck kept jumping back into the
timber and the other buck and the doe hightailed it out of there so he didn't want to take a running shot.
Evening hunt I saw two does at 500 yds.
End of rifle season and I am disappointed as all get out. I have barely had 5 deer within 250 yds of me all year. Not just rifle season. I'm
including bow season in that estimate. This flat out stinks!! Retirement from deer hunting is sure looking good cause I got a ton of stuff I need to
get done before it starts snowing and hunting is only frustrating me.

Didn't quite have the motivation to get out early, but was in the stand about 9'ish. Around 10'something I see a doe come out of the timber about
6-700 yds away. She was followed by 2 other does and they were in a hurry. I had just seen 4 dogs not far from my stand, but they were headed the
opposite direction from the does and not even within 1,000 yds of them. I thought for a second the does would turn east and come to me, but they
ended up hightailing it to the north. A bit later my Dad saw a 8 pt come out of the same timber so I guess he might be been giving them a hard time.
At the same time I saw the does I looked south of my stand and there stood the biggest buck I had seen all year. He was a main frame 8 and was well
over 140". He stood at 60 yds from me for the longest time before bedding down. I took my rifle that morning instead of the bow because of the stand
I wanted to hunt. It is a box stand that is not bow "friendly". So at this point I am assuming the dogs jumped the buck. I got a couple of pics,
but nothing great because he stayed behind a tree most of the time he was south of me before bedding down. I stayed in the stand another hour and a
half or so before finally getting down. I kept my camera out of my backpack in case I jumped him on my way out. Well, I did. I was 10 yds from him
when he hopped up. He had coke can bases with a ton of junk all over them. Thick, bladed tines both tall and wide. I would guesstimate him at 160"
or better. My Dad was about 1,000 yds from me watching when I jumped him and he could see nothing but antlers when the buck took off. He was never
really spooked and I didn't chase after him so I am sure he will be back. Just wish I knew how to ambush him. Did I mention I hate "doe" season. Go
figure the closest deer I have had to me all year is the biggest deer I have ever seen while hunting on my property. He was also seen a few days ago
chasing 7 does around for a couple of hours while they were ripping our fields. I had some chores to finish and a Xmas party to attend so I didn't
hunt in the afternoon.
Here are some pics of the buck. He was very good at hiding behind the trees.
Here's where I first saw him.

I have several of him watching me.

Headed to his bed.

And taking off when he saw me, all you can see if a white tail.

Slept in a bit again cause the wind was just rolling the camper. Got in the stand about 10 and stayed for a few hours. Was a nice 60+ degree day
with pretty strong wind gusts for a few hours. Then all heck broke loose and the wind changed directions, got stronger, dropped 20+ degrees, and
started sleeting. Got out of the stand at noon and did some scouting for the afternoon hunt. Ran into town with my Dad and the temp had dropped to
29 degrees. Got some lunch at my folks house and then hooked my boat up and moved it out to our seed barn to keep it out of the winter weather. Temp
had dropped another 4 degrees while we were in town. Got back out to the stand and started falling asleep. About 4:20 or so my Dad elbows me in time
for me to look up and see 7 does coming into range. He wasn't in a good position for a shot so I lined up on one of the does when they started to
spook and dropped her in a dead run. Right front should entry and no exit. Took out the right lung and some other things were shredded, but
unrecognizable. Very cold and windy field dressing job. Used my butt out for the first time. Pretty cool! Works really good when you use a zip tie
to tie off the @$%# canal too. For now the doe is hanging in my Dad's garage. Gonna head back down there tomorrow after work to get started on
butchering her. Temp was 14 degrees by the time we got back in town.

Last hunt of the year. I decided to take HomertheHunter up on his offer and hunt up on his place. We got out there around 2:30 or so. And upon
getting settled into my stand I see Homer walking my way. Turns out the thieves had returned and took his stand and climbing sticks. He then headed
to a different stand and neither one of us saw a single deer all day. So much for the lunar tables!! I did see several big squirrels and 1 possum.
This has probably been the most disappointing archery season I have ever had.
