Homemade Cultipacker

I've been received several emails regarding the cultipacker I built, so I thought I'd post under foodplots in case some people have missed it. I plan to draw up rough plans of the packer, and post on under this topic so people can make their own if they choose.

The reason for changing to a hitch/frame, is because the chain would allow the cultipacker to roll into the back of the ATV when going down hill. Or, it would roll off to the side when turning a corner. Thus, it jerked and slammed into the ATV.....350 - 500 lbs can make quite the impact!

Looks great!! I've been meaning to build something like that myself for awhile now. Just out of curiosity, did you have a cement truck fill the tube for you, or did you use cement bags - if you used bags, about how many did it take?

Thanks!

I was going to do this last year and my problem was finding the straight ribbed culvert pipe.

Where did you get yours and what kind of cost was it??

I would like to make one about 8' to pull behind the tractor so it would obviously be 12".

My other question is, that would still be much heavier than a guy would really need. Have you thought of or seen a good way to use some kind of filler other than the concrete to save a little weight?

bigred...I could be wrong, but I think there is a smaller pipe ran through the original pipe that is set in the concrete so that it acts as an axle.

Correct, it acts like an axle....smaller diameter pipe run through larger diameter - fixed pipe.

Hoyt - I thought about using a filler, but then that would create more time, pour, fill, pour, etc...I thought about gravel, mulch and other stuff but decided to just pour solid concrete since it was only 38" long.

I got my straight ribbed culvert from a place off of Lindbergh and 270, next to the abandoned Ford plant. I forget the name of the place. I believe the name is Thompson Culvert Co. They had a 6' piece that I had to buy, and I had them cut it down to size. I believe I paid $90 - $120. It was cheap. I would think a 12" x 8' piece would around the same amount. Any higher and I'd question it, or call around.

Looks good smoke!! And it looks like someone got 'em a new 4 wheeler, sweet! Here's a suggestion Hoyt if you want to go to the trouble when you build yours. Have the culvert company cut it up into sections, say about every two or three grooves. Then just cut up your larger pipe to match. You will want to use a large enough outer pipe to allow each section to move around substantially on the axle. It will take longer to pour your concrete cause you will have to form each section. However what this will accomplish is it lets the cultipacker "float" so to speak over the ground and it allows it to contact the ground more evenly, really handy on uneven ground. Nice work Smoke with the drawings.:2thumbsup::2thumbsup:

I saw one similar on another forum, maybe qdma but I am not sure, and the guy used approx. 2"X2" pieces of styrafoam the length of the pipe for filler. I also saw one made with the other style of ribbing, whatever you call it, and he said he actually liked it better than the straight ribbing.

Jaytee,

That is a good idea! It would take some extra time, but that would work great as you said. I never thought about that.

I haven't seen one made with the spiraled ribbing, but wouldn't that cause the packer to track one way or the other?

I would think it might cause it to run off center. Outside of pinning it solid, and that wouldn't be good for turns, it might be a problem.

That's what I was thinking. If you had it on a chain it would track one way, if you had it on a frame with a hitch it would sure cause some stress to that tongue I would think.

Not sure that it would stress the tongue because your hitch should rotate around the ball but it could run off center enough to get into your rear tires.

Either way it doesn't sound like a good idea.
