Squirrel Season 2012 Countdown
Only 27 more days until the season opener. I'm pretty stoked. I have my Marlin Model 60, 39A and a 10-22 all tuned up and ready to go. How many of you
use squirrel season, as I do, to keep your rifle skills sharp?

No wonder he always missed the coons.
He was hunting squirrels.
You have him confused!

It's a GREAT day to be ALIVE!
You miss 100% of the shots you DON'T take!
Luck is the point where preparation meets opportunity!

More squirrels in the yard in central mo than i've seen in a long time. saw alot turkey hunting too. The hickories in the yard didn't get frosted and
are allready growing good. pignuts, smoothbarks are doing good. no scalybarks close, but they should have lots of nuts for the rats as well.

Squirrel hunting is a good way to keep your shooting skills sharp, if you use a rifle. I love to hunt them but not necessarily for that reason. We
both love to eat squirrel and quite honestly, I would rather hunt squirrel as deer.
I posted something like this once before, somewhere....tongue in cheek of course.
10 reasons squirrel hunting is better than deer hunting:
1. There are a LOT more squirrels than deer
2. The season is 8 1/2 months long
3. There is a LOT less people in the woods
4. Squirrel is better eating than deer
5. Squirrels can be just as challanging to hunt as deer
6. For a rifleman they are a considerably smaller target thus keeping your eye sharp, (as Chromie alluded to)
7. When was the last time you saw a deer fall out of a tree and laughed at it?
8. There is less intensity and more pleasure in squirrel hunting
9. Squirrels are a lot easier to clean
10. It's cheaper to hunt squirrels

I'll agree with everything but number 4...depending on who's cooking each and how they're cooked.
Either way...I'll be killing KS tree rats very soon

Anytime I am free I hate those rats when sitting in a tree waiting for deer or turkey. The turkey I shot the last day a squirrel just sat on a branch
and barked at me for 20 min till I killed the bird.

I normally use a shotgun when the leaves are on the trees, and switch to my .22 during Fall/Winter.
My power was out the other day, and it turns out a squirrel had fried itself on the transformer up the hill from me. The Ameren guy said we need some
squirrel hunters, because there are so many this year. (He's right; there's young ones all over on my place).

Chromie, the most successful 22LR cartridge I ever used is the Winchester Super-X. Plain ol' 40 gr. round nose. Back when I used a 22 I tried a lot
of different ammo including Ely and Ely match and in most of my rifles the Super-X still grouped better. I like CCI's but I never had a rifle that
liked them as well as the Win. On the lfip side, my oldest son had a rifle, and I don't recall what, that preferred the cheap Federal above all
others.....go figger.

Winchester makes a Subsonic HP now, that I love!
I think the power points of today are similar to the super-x of the day. that could be way off, I was told by another shooter that was true. 2nd hand
info....

I don't remember the last time I bought a brick of 22 cartridges.....is the regular, standard velocity 40 gr. round nose Super-X not made any longer?
