Bird ID needed....

First off...I already know what type of bird this is but....

When Mastevt posted his photo of his sighting of a bald eagle on his place it brought me to thinking about a friend of mine that lives in New York City. His roots are here in Missouri but is a pretty business oriented guy numbers and upper management wise. Anyway I've been sending him pics from my game camera and included the one I entered it the contest over the weekend in Columbia of the bald eagle on the deer carcass. He then returns an email saying that they have bald eagles all up and down the Hudson River there. He said that he watches them from his apartment and office window catching fish and flying up to the trees to eat them. He took a photo of one and sent it to me.

What do you guys think....

Is this a Bald Eagle?

Looks like an osprey or as they call them in the Mid-Atlantic, a fishhawk.

I know my friend is smart because he makes 10 times as much money as I do but I just didn't have the nerve to tell him his "Bald Eagle" was indeed an "Osprey". I guess that there are "Country Smarts" and "City Smarts". He was my brother in law for awhile but we are still friends and I'll have a place to stay if I ever get to New York City in my future.

It is indeed an Osprey.

I've seen lots of ospreys around the Lake and once in awhile a bald eagle or juvenile bald eagle and even at my property which is quite aways from the lake.

I grew up in New England, they're all over. Neat as heck to see one catch a fish as they smack the water but good.

They are indeed very interesting raptors. They were quite common where we lived in Wyoming and always a joy to watch when fishing. We also had Golden eagles there along with the bald. All fascinating.

We're blessed to frequently see both bald eagles and osprey where we live.

I was a very grateful audience to a golden eagle last august in Wyoming that was cruising very near a watering hole I was hunting.
Awesome and the first one I had ever seen in the wild... takes your breath away.

Mr. Hornbuckle told us one year, that an adult Golden will kill 1 mule deer or antelope PER DAY, in the dead of winter!!!! Dat's alot of dead goats!!! They get the herd running, until they can't run anymore, then the eagle lands on thier back and starts eating!!!!:wave:

Goldens are very successful predators. Elmer Keith wrote of finding hundreds of mountain goat kid skeletons beneath a Golden eagle nest. That was back in the 30's and 40's.....the eagles were shot on sight. Never heard of them taking antelope or deer fawns but don't doubt they couldn.
