Default My Saturday encounter with a hognose snake

I spotted this feller crossing the road when I was coming back from the grocery store. At first, I thought it was a prairie kingsnake but then he swelled up and I knew for sure what it was, an eastern hognose snake. Where I grew up, folks called them spreadheads, for the obvious reason. I hadn't seen one this large since I was a kid. Pretty cool snake!

PS. embedded video is in the next post. I sure wish I knew how to fix this!

I've only seen one. I was mowing and he flaired up for a fight and then dropped down and went slithering off and then came back.....straight under the spinning blades of the riding mower. Ended up with 12 short snakes.

They are impressive. Not for people that are afraid of snakes.

Aggravate them a little and they'll flop over and act they're dying ! Pretty cool snakes . Seems like I remember hearing that they love to eat toads that nothing else can stomach

I find them quite often on a certain mountain I hunt on. They were listed as fairly rare but in this one particular place I can count on seeing several during spring turkey season and squirrel hunting in early fall. Kinda like another place I hunt is full of armadillos. Many people don't see live armadillos but this place I ran across three in less than 1/4 mile.

I thought armadillos were flat and lived on the shoulder of hiways.
