Its heavy work.. I estimated well over a ton of lead when I finished that room.. I didn't concern myself with the pain and glue.. melting it outside burns it off.. I did however melt everything into ingots for ease of storage

Wear a mask.... get help... its not easy work and will wear a guy slap thin pretty quick

It's also about the best lead a fella can come up with in volume.

I'm fortunate to be friends with the folks who do stained glass at the craft mall. All those ends and pieces of lead add up pretty quickly and I get it for cheap.

Radioactive, that scrap is probably alloyed with some tin and antimony. Are they using 50/50 or 95/5 ?

Should make some pretty good boolits.

Probably not many on here have heard the term

" soft enough I can cut it with my fingernail" it was several yrs ago now. I cut up enough to fill a 15.00 flat rate box reinforced it filled it and mailed it to tradhunter.. I got close to 70lbs in that box.. and usps actually handled it lol.. I have a 30 cal ammo can full of 54 conicals and still can't see the floor under the ingots Lol

You can definitely cut X-ray room lead with your fingernail. I bought 500 lbs. of the stuff 20 some years ago for 20 cents a lb. Still have a few plastic 5 gal. buckets about half full of 1 lb. and 1/2 lb. ingots. You can't fill them, the weight breaks the sides. That and a half bucket is heavy enough to move around!!

I think it was CJ who gave me some dive weights....maybe not, I forget. I learned dive weights are like sail boat keels. Anything that resembles lead goes in them. I added about a quarter of a dive weight to a melt and it took me a week to get it alloyed to where it was the same hardness, would cast, measure and weigh the same as previous bullets. Like a dolt I didn't write down what I had to add to make it work.

Mule, I don't know for certain but I think the lead they use in stained glass window making is pretty much straight lead. You can see a difference in color between the....pieces of lead they put the glass in, (whatever they're called) and the solder joints. I believe you're right about the solder, however.

So, when you guys cast, do you drop into water or just onto a solid surface?

I quench bullets I want hard. C.f. rifle and semiauto pistol bullets. Others I drop onto a folded t- shirt or towel
Hot bullets can dent if dropped on something hard, including other bullets.

76_Michael,

Size and lube some of those maxiballs. Then run them through your 45 ACP.
