Default New Bait Tank project

Ok, been thinking about this for awhile, but just decided to get started. Planning on building a big bait tank using one of those large 275 gallon IBC totes. Just got a smoking deal ($25) on a $200 above ground pool pump that is brand new in the box.

https://www.polygroupstore.com/product-p/p53cp2009w05.htm

Talking to a guy about picking up a used tote this weekend.

Sounds like a lot of pump for that size tank.

Initially I thought it might be, but after researching on catfish1.com I don't think it is. This one is 2000 gph. This guy used one that is 2400 gph:

Quote:
Pumps are rated in ideal zero lift conditions and most are over-rated on top of that. You can always throttle a pump down but you cannot increase flow if it isn't there.

The pump should have flow ratings at varying amounts of lift and even these are generous. Every elbow or bend in your piping and any restrictions including your spray bar will greatly reduce output.

I am using a 2400 gph fountain pump. It is fairly expensive and rated for continuos use. By the time I went through 5 elbows, a spray bar (with generous amounts of 1/2" holes in 4 spray bars), and 4 foot of lift, my flow is decreased by over half I am pretty sure and I am using 1" PVC. It is doing a great job in my tank that has 200 actual gallons of water but if I had started off with a smaller pump I think I'd be in trouble.
Here is the link to his set up:

I like that. We have a old freezer and a pool pump, just haven't started putting it together yet

How do you keep the water cool during the summer?

Dad used frozen one gallon milk jugs. He had a few so he could rotate them as he needed.

I have a small room in my shed that is partially finished (ie insulated) and it usually stays fairly cool in there. It has an outside window that I could put a small a/c unit but I hope it is not needed.

Frozen milk jugs help a ton to keep healthy baits. G Juice is great for the water also.

And being sure to only have green sunfish in the tank, and not bluegill. Bluegill will pixx up a tank something fierce and that ammonia is a killer. (G Juice is a neutralizer, but it can't keep up with a bunch of gills).

Made some progress today. Got it filled with about 175 gallons to give it a test drive and cycle the water through to dechlorinate it. Need to finish up the plumbing tomorrow to the bio filter.
